Each location offers a unique experience, and all are perfect if you want to experience the city beyond the typical tourist trail. Let’s take a look at these treasures that will make your Rio adventure even more special!
#1 – Parque Lage (Lage Park)
Parque Lage is a free, lush and expansive public park in the Botanical Garden neighborhood of Rio. It is a part of the Tijuca Rainforest and is often overlooked by tourists. This green oasis is home to beautiful walking trails and tranquil lakes.

The historic mansion (an old sugar mill from Colonial Brazil) now houses the School of Visual Art. It has a very picturesque courtyard with a pool and a café with a view towards Christ the Redeemer.
You can explore the grounds, enjoy a leisurely picnic, or wander through art exhibits while surrounded by stunning views of Rio’s tropical landscape. It’s a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike making it one of our favourite hidden gems in Rio.
Hidden gems – Top Tip #1
The mansion’s charming terrace makes it a very picturesque spot for holiday snaps. Even though the rest of the park and mansion weren’t busy when we visited, there was a queue of people who wanted to get that perfect picture in front of the pool.
If you’re not a big fan of queuing but still want to capture this lovely spot here is a tip. Instead of taking pictures from the middle (like everyone else who is queueing) move slightly to the left of the courtyard for a different but still beautiful angle of the pool with Christ the Redeemer in the background. Just set up your camera and wait for the middle section to become empty (before the people in front of the queue take their place in the normal spot), and you have a perfect shot!
#2 – Theatro Municipal (Municipal Theatre)
Rio’s Theatro Municipal is one of the city’s most underrated landmarks and one of the biggest hidden gems in Rio located in the Centro neighbourhood. Inspired by Palais Garnier in Paris, this beautiful theatre boasts a breathtaking interior and hosts ballet, concerts, and of course opera
However, if you don’t have time to see a performance you can join one of the guided tours. The are available Tuesday to Saturday and tickets are only 20BRL ($3.5) per person. Unfortunately you can only purchase them in cash at the box office on the same morning. There are limited spaces are available and unfortunately you can’t book in advance. This tour is only available in Portuguese, but we found that the transcript feature of Google Translate works great to follow along in whatever language you speak.
Hidden gems – Top Tip #2
Alternatively, you can book a more expensive 4h guided tour around the National Theatre & National Library with live commentary in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, and German. It’s a great option if you want a hassle-free experience and learn about the history of those two amazing places.
#3 – Jardim Botânico (Botanical Gardens)
Jardim Botânico (the Botanical Gardens) is further proof that Rio is so much more than Carnival and beaches. Founded in 1808 by ten Portuguese prince regent D. João, it is an oasis of tranquility and a lush jungle in the middle of the bustling city. The entry free is 73BRL ($12) per person and there are discounts for students so don’t forget to bring your card with you.

This place is truly gorgeous! The layout includes towering palm trees, tranquil ponds, colourful flowerbeds, and fountains making it the perfect place for quiet escape. If you’re visiting in the summer it provides loads of natural and much needed shade. During your visit make sure you explore some stunningly beautiful greenhouses. Make sure you don’t miss the prettiest of hidden gems in Rio – an orchid house with over 600 different species.
Hidden gems – Top Tip #3
Please note that they only take cash here so make sure you have it with you. Not like us the first time we tried to visit it🤦🏼♀️🤦🏾♂️). There are few cash points (ATMs) within 10min walk where you can take the money out in case you don’t usually carry cash on you.
#4 – Mirante Dona Marta (Dona Marta Lookout)
If you love stunning views, Mirante Dona Marta is a must. This lesser-known viewpoint is free to visit and offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of Rio. The best time to visit is at sunrise or sunset. That’s when the orange hues bathe Guanabara Bay and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.
The best way to get there is to drive there or by Uber. There is a car park at the top and viewpoint is safe as there are always few people around. If you’re planning to come for sunrise (which we recommend) make sure you come early (at least 30 min before) to secure a good spot. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight to find your way in the.
Hidden gems – Top Tip #4
If you come here in an Uber or Taxi make sure you arrange with them the return trip. The signal in the area can get very patchy. In addition there are not many Ubers in the area so it can get tricky to get a return ride. You don’t want to get stuck there especially if you have lots to explore or come here for sunset.
#5 – Pedra de Arpoador (Arpoador Rock)

For coastal views of Rio, head to Pedra de Arpoador, a large rock formation that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean between the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Arpoador offers panoramic views of the city’s beaches and mountains, with the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance.
While nearby beaches get crowded, Pedra de Arpoador offers a much quieter atmosphere. This is where you can relax, take in the natural beauty, and enjoy one of the best sunsets in Rio. The hike up the rock is short and manageable, making it accessible for all visitors.
This is a real hidden gem in Rio, mainly visited by locals and those in the know. There’s wonderful upbeat atmosphere here. Often with drinks and dance once the sun goes down – especially if you’re visiting during Carnival!
Hidden gems – Top Tip #5
If you’re coming for sunset make sure you arrive early to get a good spot (it can get quite busy here). We suggest to bring some snacks and drinks with you. Don’t worry if you forget or you don’t want to be carrying things around. There are few entrepreneurial vendors who will sell you soft drinks, snacks, and even cocktails while you watch the sunset.
#6 – Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading
This stunning library is definitely the most unique out of all hidden gems in Rio. Located in Centro, it is free to enter and houses the biggest collection of Portuguese literature (outside of Portugal). You can also see here a few rare volumes, that date back to the 18th century. This incredibly preserved building is very often overlooked by visitors making it the best cultural hidden gem in Rio.
Walking up the marble staircase into reading rooms, we felt like we stepped into another century – or a Harry Potter movie. The floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with books, the intricate woodwork, and the colourful light filtering through stained glass make the interior breathtaking.
Hidden gems – Top Tip #6
The library consists of one main room, so you don’t need much time to visit (unless you’re aiming for the perfect photo). It’s an easy addition to any Rio itinerary.

#7 – Restaurante Marius Degustare
For a truly unique dining experience, Restaurante Marius Degustare in Leme is a hidden gem that offers an unforgettable feast. Known for its seafood and churrasco (Brazilian barbecue), Marius is one-of-a-kind, with the most quirky interior you’ll ever see. It feels like a blend of an art gallery, a museum, and a restaurant.
All the walls are adorned with maritime memorabilia and unusual trinkets (there’s even a whole car attached to one wall!). However with dimmed lighting, the atmosphere here is intimate and welcoming. The restaurant’s mix of buffet-style service and traditional churrasco features an extensive selection of meats, fish, seafood, sushi, and traditional Brazilian sides, making it perfect for food lovers looking to experience the true flavours of Rio.
We loved the décor, atmosphere and food here and glad we got to visit it during our trip. If you have to visit only one Churrascaria while in Rio, so you might as well make it Restaurante Marius.
Hidden gems – Top Tip #7
We recommend booking table in advance as it will save you a disappointment as this place gets very busy. If you also want to save money make sure you bring cash with you. If you can pay a whole bill in a cash (including tip) you’ll get 10% discount. We think it’s definitely worth doing that!
